Fear the Lord?

Fear the Lord is a daunting thought for seasoned christians, not to mention those who are young in their faith. When we think about being “afraid” of the Lord it can make us think that God is this awesome power of destruction here to ruin our lives and tear us apart when we step out of line. This, however isn’t the heart of God for us. God loves us and did the one thing that none of us were able to do. He conquered sin and death so that we could come back to Him. This is not the heart of a fear monger, but of compassionate, caring and loving God. While these characteristics are made known through God’s son Jesus, we do see God’s awesome power displayed throughout the old testament. If we look to the fear that we see the Bible referring to we get a picture of awe, wonder, and reverence. Those who fear the Lord, are at awe for His creativity, in wonder of His love, and have reverence for His authority and power.

Praise the Lord!

I will thank the Lord with all my heart
as I meet with his godly people.
How amazing are the deeds of the Lord!
All who delight in him should ponder them.
Everything he does reveals his glory and majesty.
    His righteousness never fails.
He causes us to remember his wonderful works.
How gracious and merciful is our Lord!
He gives food to those who fear him;
    he always remembers his covenant.
He has shown his great power to his people
by giving them the lands of other nations.
All he does is just and good,
and all his commandments are trustworthy.
They are forever true,
to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity.
He has paid a full ransom for his people.
He has guaranteed his covenant with them forever.
What a holy, awe-inspiring name he has!
10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.
All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom.

Praise him forever!
